![]() Whether you use 50/50 prediluted or 100% pure antifreeze, run the engine for a few minutes with the radiator cap removed, and fill up as the coolant level drops. ![]() The reason for putting in the 100% pure antifreeze 1st is because most cooling systems won't drain fully and will leave a lot of water in the system, so if you add the right amount of water first you could end up with too little antifreeze. ![]() But if you decided to pay about half as much per gallon of coolant, find the capacity of your cooling system, and put in half that amount of 100% pure antifreeze, then top off with distilled water, including filling the plastic overflow tank to at least the "minimum" mark. If you bought the prediluted type (probably labelled "50/50" or "ready to use"), just pour it in until the radiator is full. Antifreeze is sold in either pure form or prediluted with 45-50% water. You can't run with 100% pure antifreeze because that can make the engine overheat (antifreeze carries away heat just half as well as pure water does), and it won't protect as well against freezing as a mixture of 50/50 antifreeze & water will. Then fill the system with 50-60% pure antifreeze and 40-50% distilled water. With some cars it's very difficult to remove the tank, in which case you may just want to pump out the liquid in it. Drain the plastic overflow tank as well, and if it's not too much trouble, rinse it out. A lot of liquid may remain in the cooling system unless you remove heater hoses and blow air into them. If the water pump is hard to replace, that is, driven by the timing belt, don't use a cleaner because it could cause a very slight water pump leak to turn into a big one.īasically, drain the system, refill with just distilled water, run the engine for 1-2 minutes, and repeat all this, 1-2 times. Use the correct antifreeze because quick lube places and even some good garages use "universal" antifreeze that's not quite what the vehicle maker wants. I apologize for the negativity but when money is tight, car maintenance annihilates your wallet and it sucks when you don't know enough about cars to make an educated decision besides paying a shop on the assumption that they are trustworthy and will do a good job. All I want to know is, can I just pour it in? Do I need to flush the whole system? Can I mix old coolant with new? The sad thing is that I will probably just end up spending the $120 anyway because I don't feel comfortable doing much DYI on my car because I don't know enough and don't want to ruin the engine. So I bought some coolant that seems to be the right kind for the engine. I probably don't know enough to do it myself but for fuck's sake why is every aspect of car maintenance so expensive. I cannot believe it would cost $120 do get jiffy lube to flush the system, so I would like to do it myself. If you have any questions, send us a modmail.
